Brussels lowers soft wheat harvest estimate

Europa

The European Commission has lowered its estimate of the common wheat harvest in the European Union to 125.3 million tonnes. The harvest is therefore 800,000 tons smaller than the estimate in August.

Due to the new reduction, the production of soft wheat is slightly lower than last year when 125,700 tons of this wheat were harvested. This amounts to a difference of 0.3% to the detriment of this year. Compared to the 5-year average, the harvest is slightly larger (+0.8%).

The Netherlands harvests more than average

The production of soft wheat this year is smaller than normal, especially in Spain, Estonia and Latvia. In Latvia in particular, this is mainly the result of lower yields after the area has clearly expanded.

The Netherlands, Italy and Slovakia harvest significantly more than the average over the past five years. According to the European Commission, production figures in these countries are more than 10% above the average level in these countries. A larger area of this wheat has been grown, especially in the Netherlands and Italy.

The largest wheat producers in the EU – France and Germany – are achieving a fairly normal harvest from the country, according to the European Commission. According to the new figures, the French soft wheat harvest amounts to 34.9 million tons, while the harvest in Germany amounts to around 20.7 million tons.
